Set on a 500-acre estate that dates back more than a thousand years, the current castle was built in the early 1800s by the famous architect John Nash. It is surrounded by mature trees and rolling countryside, and looks onto its own large private lake, which includes small islands where ancient ruins can be found. The grounds are extensive and very private, yet this property is within an hour of Shannon International Airport, the historic cities of Galway and Ennis, and world-famous sites such as the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher. Guests enjoy the tranquillity of the castle grounds, where you will find an equestrian center and a cross-country horseback riding course. There is excellent fishing and boating on the lake. You can also explore the surrounding area, with its natural beauty and wealth of history and culture. There are many activities in the area for the sports enthusiast, including golf, shooting, and sailing. This castle is a family home, with a feeling of great warmth, comfort, and complete privacy for up to 17-18 guests. There are 8 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, several large reception rooms, a formal dining room, and 2 fully equipped kitchens. The majority of the castle has been refurbished within the last two years and very tastefully decorated. The splendid Regency interior features an open fireplace, many fine paintings, and period furnishings. An ideal property for a special occasion, the castle can seat up to 180 guests for a party, wedding, or business function. In addition, there are also three independent, attractively furnished 18th-19th century cottages available for short term rental on the estate: a 4 bedroom/2 bath, 4 bedroom/1 1/2 bath, and 3 bedroom/1 1/2 bath.
